Essential oils are believed to have a beneficial holistic effect on our physical and psychological health. Modern knowledge is aiming to revive its use by incorporating it into our daily routine and rituals in order to associate it with certain feelings of relaxation or invigoration. That sounds a little fancy and imaginative, right? But we’re surrounded by essential oils and we might not even notice it.
Essential oils are just a highly concentrated version of the natural oils in plants. It is commonly found in household products such as mentholated camphor balms used for relieving colds, or your favorite linen spray. Some essential oils can even reduce infection or the possibility of inflammation when applied to the human skin.
How do essential oils work?
Scent memory is very powerful. Even after so many years, once you smell something that reminds you of your childhood memories, you’re instantly transported to a different time and place. It doesn’t even have to be a strong scent, even that faint scent of apple candy brings you back to those times of carefree living and playing with your childhood friends. When you constantly use the same essential oils to your environment, you create a safe space and your brain associates it with certain events and actions.
If you’re feeling a little stressed, anxious or in dire need of rejuvenation, there are essential oils that can help you reduce those negative feelings and give you a better and healthier state of body and mind.
What do I need?
Here are some of the things that you need to have:
- Essential oil of your choice
- An ultrasonic diffuser
- Carrier oil
- Glass spray bottles and glass roller bottles
How do I begin?
As soon as you get home from work, start your routine by changing into comfortable clothes and spraying it with a grounding spray. What are grounding sprays? Grounding is a term in aromatherapy that means to connect with the present, being in the now physically, spiritually, emotionally and mentally. For a better understanding, think of a tree that has roots that go deep within the earth to connect with networks of nutrients and water to help it grow stronger and taller. Choose an essential oil that will help you transition from work environment to your home environment. In your glass spray bottle, combine 20 drops of essential oil, fill it to the top with water and shake well before use.
Here are the top 10 best essential oils for grounding:
- Vetiver
- Sandalwood
- Cedarwood
- Frankincense
- Rosewood
- Patchouli
- Ylang Ylang
- Petitgrain
- Cypress
- Angelica Root
Personal Perfume
You might also want to consider creating your very own perfume using essential oils. You can roll it onto your inner wrists, behind the ears and the back of your neck throughout the day when you’re feeling stressed. This can help you sleep better at night because the more relaxed you are during the day, the better you’ll sleep at night. Simply combine 10 drops of each of your favorite scents then fill it to the top with a carrier oil.
Here’s a sample blend of perfumes:
- Sweet orange + lemon + patchouli + bergamot
- Lime peel + rosemary + palmarosa + cloves
- Jasmine + rosemary + vetiver + sandalwood
- Vanilla + neroli
- Petitgrain + sage
Massage
There’s something about massages that make you feel twice as relaxed. What you can do is to use your favorite essential oil and roll a couple of swipes around the edges of your face. Then, smooth it from your cheekbone to the chin with the heel of your hand. Move back and forth along the line of your jaw and massage your temples gently. You can do this in other parts of your body as well. If you’re feeling a little achy near your feet, just swipe it on your hand and massage it to the area. Or better yet, have your significant other do the massaging for you.
Ultrasonic Diffuser
This is one of the most popular and effective ways to enjoy aromatherapy. All you have to do is:
- Choose a location – pick an open area in a room or office that has a solid surface. You will also need a nearby outlet to plug it in. Diffusers have water and it is good to have a placemat or a towel underneath especially if you’re going to place it on a wooden surface. Make sure that you do not put it in direct sunlight or near a fan.
- Add water – Fill your diffuser to the maximum fill line of the water reservoir with clean tap water. Refer to your diffuser manual for other instructions.
- Add oils – Add 3 to 10 drops of essential oils to the water. Usually, 6 drops are enough but if the room is bigger and you want a stronger scent, you may add more.
Other benefits of essential oils
- Balances hormones – Essential oils like clary sage, geranium and thyme can help balance out estrogen and progesterone levels in your body. It can improve conditions like infertility, PCOS and PMS and menopause symptoms.

How about you? What’s your favorite essential oil?
Lavender has got to be my favorite essential oil. It relaxes me so much and I really love the powdery and gentle scent.
Lavander, also my all-time FAVE!
Essential oils are my latest addiction. I just recently ordered about 10 more to my collection. I just love mixing them together and creating new scents almost weekly.
I have a diffuser at home but I don’t use essential oils. I use this scent called forest bamboo and I want to know if there’s anything that smells similar to that? It’s a very fresh clean and crisp scent.
I love citrus scents in the living room. However, I find it too bothersome to have a different scent in my bedroom. Is it still effective if the scents in those different rooms have different purposes? Invigorating and relaxing? Wouldn’t it confuse my body every time I walk into those rooms?
Ylang Ylang is amazing for grounding. I really feel like truly I’m being welcomed home whenever I would start diffusing it.
I also love Ylang Ylang. It smells so nice and not too overpowering.
Essential oils have been a very integral part of my routine. Our bodies love routine as well and it helps me get ready for bed almost instantly.
Even my husband loves petitgrain. Our home smells so wonderful all the time.
Sandalwood is wonderful. But I prefer my citrus! ?
It is good to use essential oils to fight the tough battle with anxiety. I have never used essential oils but it sounds so relaxing that I am planning to use it soon.
Where do I find essential oils. I don’t think I would find it in the local store here, Because I live in a very remote area and we barely find the essential here.

I would love to make my own personal perfume. I really love the smell of lemon and sandalwood. And it would be great to combine both of the fragrance and make my own personalized perfume.
I am allergic to perfumes and scents. It would be really good option for me to use this organic fragrance instead.
I didn’t know we can do so much using essential oils. Thanks for the information.
I really found this article interesting. I have 3 different types of essential oils, which was gifted by my friend and I was wondering what will I do with that. But I think now I have the better idea and would make the most out of it.
I just hate scents and perfumed smells it gives me headaches.
Essential oils helped me with inner peace, sleep, restlessness, irritability and panic attacks. I am so thankful my friend who suggested me to massage with essential oils every day and it worked wonders for me.
It would be better to consult a specialist and test the area proceeding with caution as they may react differently to different individuals, especially children, and pregnant women.
Be careful while buying essential oils!! Make sure the bottle says 100% pure essential oil, and the proper name of the spices mentioned on the label of the bottle. If you see the word fragrance its almost always means there are other additives.
I’ve been using essential oils for years now. I mix few drops of rosemary, avocado, ylang-ylang, lemon grass, grape seed oils to my base oil and give a good scalp massage and it really works very well for me, and when I have dandruff I only mix tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil to my base oil and give a little massage before washing my hairs, also a few drops of geranium oil to my body lotion. I am also gonna try mixing these oils and make my own perfume.
My favorite is rosemary and tea tree oil which I use on a daily basis along with carrier oil. Preferably olive oil for face and hair. Rosemary has worked very well for the hair fall problem.
Thank you for the article. I haven’t tried any essential oils. I didn’t know they have these many wonderful properties.
Could you also use the cedar-wood oil for sleep or is it more beneficial as a tropical??
My favorite oil for stress and anxiety is lavender, and while meditation I use a brand called spa room.
Do you suggest applying to the bottom of the feet?? How often can you repeat the dose in one night to fall and stay asleep?? Thank you!!!
Thank you for providing this excellent information!! I really appreciate it.
A friend gave me a few bottles. She also told me not to use until I research them myself. She did say she used this or that for such and such. But that I must do my own research before using them.
It is better to do your own research before ingesting or using any oils some essential oils are not pure and are adulterated and have fillers in them that’s why they are therapeutic grade the oils I use are pure and they are certified therapeutic grade oils. So people need to do their research before using them.
I am a professional housekeeper and I use essential oils in all my cleaning and I change them according to my clients need. Our favorite are rosemary, orange, pine, peppermint, and lavender. I have made a cream that I use on my face with coconut oil as a carrier and few drops of frankincense. At night I diffuse grapefruit or peppermint and orange as these are my husbands favorite.
I love essential oils. It has changed my and my kid’s life. We haven’t been seriously sick since using them. My son’s seasonal allergies are gone using lavender. Even his allergic asthma coughs went away once I apply lavender to his neck.
I’ve been applying frankincense around my ears and neck before bed and getting the best sleep!! I just ordered vetiver and I am going to try them combined.
Can I combined these oils and put it in a diffuser with water??
Are there any oils you can suggest for dizziness? I have bouts of dizziness for last 2 weeks. A very floaty feeling like I have been stuck on a nasty boat ride.
Are these essential oils safe to use on a toddler? My son wakes up 4 to 5 times at night and he is almost 2. I’m looking for something natural so that it can help him sleep better.
I tried 3 oils formula and it helped!! I used an olive oil base to put them in, should I have just used them straight?? I did sleep better, but not all night, would it help to not use a base??
I just really like essential oils in general. There’s something about aromatherapy that does wonders when you’re doing something relaxing like reading a book, having a dip in your bathtub or even watching TV. The refreshing aroma just makes you feel relaxed!
I used to like scented candles but I really find diffusers with essential oils a lot better. Although candles set a nice mood when you light them up, essential oils really set up the mood just the same.
I’m not sure how essential oils can really boost your immune system but I do believe that it can trigger a change of mood in a person.
Essential oils have been my savior for so many times. I usually get panic attacks but I find that bringing a roll on of my favorite essential oil keeps me from getting worse especially when I’m not at home. I think the scent calms me down and makes me feel like I’m safe. It’s a lifesaver.
That’s really nice. What were you using?
I don’t want my home smelling like a temple of worship… I think I’d prefer something that smells fresh rather than musky or wood-like.
I’m good with using diffusers for the essential oils but I don’t want it as a perfume. I think it just smells too strong and I don’t want to smell like a grandmother.?
I could use a massage right now.
Essential oils are my new hobby. I think I ordered boxes of this…
